CHAPTER THIRTEEN

MANDY AWOKE ALONE, the too-early sunshine sneaking over the windowsill as Lucas fussed in his crib. He wasn’t quite awake yet, but if given a few minutes, noise would explode from his little lungs.

She’d known Lane would have to leave before morning. But she couldn’t help feeling disappointed.

Lucas settled back down, giving her the chance to get up and prepare the bottle before he started screaming. She climbed out of bed, hunted around for her robe, grabbing the nearest article of clothing. It was still too dark to tell what was what. Her fingers curled around fabric. She fumbled her way into the shirt, knowing immediately it wasn’t hers. It was Lane’s. She froze. Did that mean he was still here? He wouldn’t have left without it.

She headed to the kitchen, hurrying, hoping to catch Lane before he escaped.

In the kitchen she stopped suddenly. The sun peeked over the horizon and poured in via the east windows just as it had in her room. Lane was at the table. He’d made coffee and sat there, bare-chested, wearing nothing but jeans, a big ceramic cup in his hands. Steam from the warm brew wafted in front of his features as he stared out the window.

“There’s a cup for you, if you want.” He didn’t look at her.

“I... Lucas is going to be awake soon.” Amanda walked over to the refrigerator, grimacing as the bright light glared across the dimly lit room. She grabbed a bottle and headed to the microwave with it. While it warmed, she filled a coffee cup for herself. The microwave beeped, but she didn’t hear Lucas yet. So she hit the stop button and settled on the bench across from Lane.

He didn’t say anything. She didn’t, either.

Their eyes met. She set down the cup before she spilled it. “What do you want me to say?” she whispered.

He shrugged and took another sip. “Didn’t know we were having a conversation.” A smile tugged at the edge of his lips. “You got something you want to say?”

Amanda shook her head in amazement. She was still trying to think straight. He was still here. He hadn’t disappeared, though Wyatt and DJ would probably help him with that if they found him here like this—with her. Last night’s events were pretty plain. She was afraid to rock the boat.

“Last night can’t change anything.” He finally set his cup down. “The world hasn’t changed.”

“Life is never that simple.” She carefully took another sip, trying to find the right words. “I don’t expect perfection, or a life full of rainbows and sunshine.” She spoke the last words in a high squeaky voice that made Lane smile. “I’m smart enough to know there are hurdles in all relationships.”

He shook his head and stood. After walking over to the sink he rinsed his empty cup. “You’ve been reading too much psychobabble.” He turned to face her, crossed his arms over his chest. “This isn’t just a minor problem.” His anger returned, and she mourned the loss of the moment.
